On May 23rd of 2022, I became a member.
In a singular, devastating moment, I joined the vast, unrecognized group of people who personally understand the core definition of the word grief.
Heart-wrenching, soul-baring, life-altering sadness that even the word itself so spectacularly fails to describe. Membership into a club no one would ever voluntarily join.
What I did not yet understand however was the isolation that was to come with my membership. And the inability of non-members to understand - to realize not only the depth, but the duration of the event.
And most devastatingly, after the funeral, the paralyzing reluctance of the non-member world to speak to me of my loss - to even speak my wife’s name when around me.
From that wilderness/bewilderment, Shades of Grief was born. A Greeting Card company like no other in the world. A card designed to speak of, and to, grief itself. Our cards are here to offer the non-members some words...
These cards can be sent to your friends and family who are still suffering, bearing the weight of their grief quietly, and mostly alone. A beautiful communication that transcends the awkward standard, How are you doing?
We all have them in our lives - loved ones who have lost loved ones -members.
And when you send one of these cards to yours, be sure to mention their loved one by name. It will bring a smile to the tears as they read.
PS her name is Frances. My wife's name is Frances.
